Structural Strengthening of Buildings with Composite Materials (FRP) and Carbon Fibers

The need for structural upgrading of existing reinforced concrete or load-bearing masonry structures is a complex engineering challenge. At ANTHRAKIDIS Studies & Constructions, in full compliance with the Greek Code for Structural Interventions (KAN.EPE.), we implement advanced solutions using Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP), with carbon fiber as the primary material.

Mechanical Advantages of Carbon Fibers

The use of carbon fiber fabrics and laminates offers unique advantages that make them superior to traditional strengthening methods (such as concrete jacketing or steel plates):

  • High Strength-to-Weight Ratio:
Carbon fibers exhibit tensile strength many times greater than structural steel, without adding significant mass to the structure. This is critical, as seismic inertial forces are not increased.
  • Confinement of Vertical Structural Elements:
The application of carbon fibers on columns increases ductility and shear strength, preventing brittle failure modes during seismic excitation.
  • Resistance to Corrosion and Oxidation:
Unlike steel, composite materials are chemically inert, making them ideal for buildings affected by carbonation or located in high-humidity environments.
  • Preservation of Structural Geometry:
The minimal thickness of the strengthening system (just a few millimeters) allows full preservation of the architectural form and usable space dimensions.

Application Process & Quality Control

The effectiveness of FRP strengthening relies on the integrity of the interface between the concrete substrate and the composite material. Our process includes:

  • Substrate Preparation:
Mechanical cleaning and surface leveling (abrasive methods) to ensure optimal adhesion.
  • Concrete Repair:
Use of high-strength thixotropic repair mortars to fill voids, honeycombing, or damaged areas.
  • Impregnation & Bonding:
Application of specialized epoxy resins (primers and adhesives) under strictly controlled temperature and humidity conditions.
  • Protection:
Final coating for protection against ultraviolet (UV) radiation or fire protection, depending on the requirements of the structural study.

Expertise and Engineering Design

Every carbon fiber strengthening intervention by ANTHRAKIDIS Studies & Constructions is preceded by a thorough structural adequacy assessment. Proper design parameters—such as number of layers, fiber orientation, and anchorage details—are essential to ensure the effectiveness and long-term performance of the strengthening system.

Structural safety requires scientific documentation. Contact our technical team for the preparation of a strengthening study and the application of certified FRP systems to your property.
